Recipe: Best Frosting EVER…How to become a cake snob (Part 2)

(Disclosure:  This blog is not always going to be about recipes…I promise.  Because I’m not that fancy.  Or qualified.  And I don’t bake and cook a lot – just ask Hubby.  Also.  I am not a professional baker.  I don’t always do it the Betty Crocker way.  This recipe is what my mom and Ruby DeYoung passed down to me.  Though I am gonna go out on a limb and say it’s better than Betty C.)

(And…keep reading…I have a SURPRISE giveaway contest at the bottom of this post…be sure to enter!)

The Best Frosting Ever

Well, as I promised in yesterday’s post, I am going to share the most amazing, to-die-for, best frosting ever recipe.  And WARNING.  Your life will never be the same.  But before I do, I feel like I need to clarify a few things.

First of all, I realize that not all of you are as passionate about making homemade birthday cakes like I am.  We all aren’t happy bakers.  I am an accepting person and I can appreciate differences.  (Because we all can’t take a sunrise.  Sprinkle it with dew.  And cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two.  Only the Candyman can.  And maybe, on occasion, me.  At least my boys think I can.)  Anyway.

If yesterday’s post seemed like way too much work, then make it easy.  Just buy the Betty Crocker WHITE Super Moist cake mix, make it according to directions, and then throw it in a greased 9×13 pan.  (As in, forget the whole parchment paper drama.  No cake board.  No freezing.  Just bake the darn cake like it says.)  BUT. THEN…Knock it outta this world with the Best Frosting Ever.

As you recall in yesterday’s post Recipe: Best Cake Ever…How to become a cake snob (Part 1), you know that my mother and Ruby DeYoung were my reasons for becoming the cake snob that I am.  Because PEOPLE.  I cannot help it that I go all cray-cray for decadent, moist birthday cake.  After you read this recipe, you’ll be making it for more than just birthdays.  It’ll be I Got A New Job Cake, or It’s Wednesday Cake, or Just Because I Love You Cake.  Your family will come home from a hard day of work, school, or ball games and when they ask you what’s for supper, instead of saying, “Beef.  It’s what’s for dinner.” you will be saying, “Cake.  It’s What’s For Dinner.”

Let me tell you that when you make this frosting recipe, it isn’t just for cakes.  No.  This is the EXACT recipe I use to frost my sugar cookies.  It really is a jack-of-all-trades kinda frosting.

So, without further ado, I give you THE recipe.

Best Frosting Ever

4 egg whites           2 lbs. powdered sugar 3/4 c. Crisco           3 Tb. cornstarch 4 Tb. milk 1 tsp. almond flavoring

Place powdered sugar and cornstarch in a large mixing bowl. Make a well and add in the egg whites, Crisco, milk, and almond flavoring. Beat on high for 5 minutes. Store in refrigerator.

There you have it!  The best frosting you will ever make… Your life will never be the same.  You’re welcome.

Now, let’s stay focused.  I have more tips I need to share.  To decorate a cake, you’ll first need to take about 2/3 cup of the frosting and add a little milk to make it a thinner consistency.  Spread this thin layer of frosting all over the top and sides to ‘cover up the crumbs’ and give you a smooth cake surface.

Making the thin frosting layer first.

Now, with the smooth frosting layer on…we’re ready to frost!

Now, you’ll be ready to use the frosting at it’s regular/normal thick consistency.

When you’ve made the frosting, determine what colors you’ll need.  If you are going to go all fancy, then you’ll need to have some decorating supplies.  Don’t be intimidated.  Here are my supplies that I use.

Frosting supplies

Tips, decorating bags, and couplers.  Before you go hog wild, I would recommend just buying a few tips at Wal-mart or Michael’s instead of buying a box of tips.  You need to make sure you’re going to like decorating.  My mom happened to give me the box of tips with a beautiful pedestal cake stand for our wedding shower.  (One of the best gifts ever.  I almost cried.)  Ruby gave me her frosting and Santa Claus sugar cookie recipe for my wedding shower.  (I almost cried again and…one of the best gifts. EVER.)  You can buy the decorator bags and couplers (those white things you see in the picture that hold the tips in the bag) at Wal-mart or Michael’s, too.

After coming up with a design, pick your colors and use food coloring (I use the ones in the little containers with screw on lids – see picture below) to tint the frosting.  You can be a show-off and make all hues of the rainbow or make one or two, like I tend to do.

Yes, I made a race track…NASCAR may be calling me in need of my expertise.

Then, start experimenting and decorate like BOSS.  Or just slather on the yummy frosting with a knife and call it good.  It all tastes the same.  Delish.  And when you start to bake and frost homemade birthday cakes for your dear loved ones, don’t say I didn’t warn you.  And welcome to the world of being a cake snob.  We are strong in numbers, snobs.  Strong in numbers.

(Now…for the surprise.  Because I LOVE surprises and giving away gifts…Leave a comment about your thoughts in this post on this website.  The “Decorating Kit Giveaway” will be open through tomorrow afternoon until 5:00 (Friday, May 16th…in honor of my mom and her birthday!).  Then, I will pick a name at random and that person will win a little decorating kit from ME!  I will announce the winner tomorrow evening!!  It’s just a little way to say thank you to all of you for supporting me as I’ve started this blog!)
